Frequently asked questions

Are my PDFs uploaded?

No. PDFSpry reads your PDF and builds the Word document locally in your browser. Your document is not uploaded for processing, and the Word file is created on your device.

What is kept in the Word document?

Text with its fonts, sizes, bold and italics, headings, bulleted and numbered lists, simple tables, links and images. PDFSpry rebuilds the layout as normal paragraphs so the document is easy to edit, so spacing and page breaks can differ slightly from the PDF.

Does it work with scanned PDFs?

Yes. For scanned PDFs of up to 50 pages, PDFSpry can recognize English text with OCR right in your browser, so you get editable text instead of page images. It takes a few seconds per page, and the first time your browser downloads the OCR engine (about 7 MB) from PDFSpry. Your PDF is never uploaded. Check recognized text for mistakes, especially names and numbers.

What about columns, charts and complex tables?

Multi-column pages are converted into a single column in reading order. Charts and drawings made of vector shapes aren't carried over, and tables with merged or irregular cells may need tidying in Word.

Which files can I convert?

One PDF of up to 100 MB at a time. The result is a .docx file that opens in Microsoft Word, Google Docs, LibreOffice and Pages. Password-protected PDFs aren't supported yet.
