Compress PDF

Make PDFs smaller on your device, with a choice of quality levels.

Files stay on your device. Nothing is uploaded.

How to compress a PDF

  1. Step 1: Select a PDF and choose a compression level.
  2. Step 2: Compress locally and compare the original and output sizes.
  3. Step 3: Review the result and download your PDF.

Your files stay on your device. Compression varies by document; pages are never converted into pictures.

Frequently asked questions

Are my documents uploaded?

No. Reading, compression, previews and downloads happen on your device. Document contents and filenames are never sent to a server for processing.

What do the compression levels do?

Every level removes unreachable objects, deduplicates identical supported images, optimizes supported streams and uses compressed PDF object streams. Light leaves image pixels unchanged. Recommended also encodes supported images as JPEG at 82% quality with a 2400-pixel longest side. Strong uses 60% quality and 1600 pixels; fine image detail may be lost.

Will text, links, forms and bookmarks survive?

Pages are never rasterized. Existing text, fonts, vectors, bookmarks, links, annotations and form dictionaries are retained. Existing form appearances are not regenerated. Review complex interactive documents in your PDF viewer; archival conformance, linearization and editing history are not guaranteed.

Why is my PDF not smaller?

Already optimized files and text-only documents may offer little or no savings. Some encodings cannot safely be optimized here. PDFSpry compares actual bytes and keeps your original if the candidate is equal or larger; it never claims a reduction that did not happen.

Which images can be compressed?

Recommended and Strong support ordinary opaque 8-bit RGB JPEGs and raw or Flate-compressed RGB/grayscale images, including supported PNG row predictors. Masked, color-managed, very large, tiny or unusually encoded images are left unchanged. Pages with scans can become smaller when their embedded image is supported. JBIG2, JPEG 2000 and CCITT images are preserved.

Can I compress password-protected or signed PDFs?

Encrypted PDFs are refused; remove the password in an authorized PDF editor first. PDFs containing digital signatures or signature fields are refused because rewriting a PDF can invalidate signatures. Use an unsigned original.

What are the file and browser limits?

Select one PDF up to 100 MB. Processing runs in a cancellable local worker. Images over 8 megapixels and streams that exceed safe decode limits are left unchanged. Available memory varies, especially on phones; close other tabs or split a large document if processing stops.
